Located at Kensington Park Road, Couverture and the Garbstore is the perfect archetype of West London. It’s chic, relaxed interior over two floors is shrouded in rugs, glass and mirrors, making it entirely homely; go downstairs and you are greeted with a veritable den of menswear and playful accessories. Yet this creative brainchild of Emily Dyson and Ian Paley is so much more than an ideal retreat for the Notting Hill set.
According to Linda Sam, store manager and womenswear buyer at the retail haven, while Couverture blends seamlessly into its local setting, it also attracts a dedicated following who actively seek it out. “We used to be on the Kings road, but we opened this space here in 2008. We have a loyal customer base who live in the area but we also have visitors who live abroad and because of the brands we stock being quite difficult to find, they visit us when they are in London.”
“We were the first in the UK to bring in many of these brands...”
Indeed a keen brand curation lies at the heart of Couverture and the Garbstore’s enduring longevity - the store celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2018. Sprawling across three spaces, the store consists of womenswear, menswear, accessories, jewellery and homeware. “We are always on the hunt for new and emerging designers and work with them whenever possible to bring something new to the customer,” Sam adds of the discerning buy including Christian Wijinants, Rejina Pyo and Berlin’s Anntian.
“We were the first in the UK to bring in many of the brands we stock but now we are extending our offering. Every season we introduce news brands but also keep really well established brands that are in demand like Rachel Comey. Other bestsellers include Henrik Vibskov and Ace & Jig.
Sustainability is also important to us and we stock conscious brands like Mara Hoffman for example, who is working with factorise at the very forefront of sustainable practices. Milena Silvano is another one, she uses byproducts like leather in a very beautiful way.”
