New York has just kicked off fashion month, and while the familiar fashion week excitement is catching fire, attendees face the demanding reality of navigating between hundreds of shows, presentations and showrooms. And when time is of the essence, prioritising and focusing attention on the right talent is crucial. Below, ORDRE picks five up-and-coming designers that are worth your time this season.

Khaite

Donned by celebrities like Saoirse Ronan and Kirsten Dunst, New York-based label Khaite offer quintessentially chic uniforms for 21st-century women. Balancing masculine and feminine tropes, collections are defined by sleek tailoring and elegant lean dresses with puffed sleeves, all rendered in clean, muted tones.

Area NYC

In the mood for understated yet refreshing glamour? Area has you covered with a unique point of view on textile development and feminine embellishments. Founded in 2014 by designers Beckett Fogg and Piotrek Pansczczyk in New York City, the label is now stocked at leading retailers across the globe, from Barneys in the US to I.T in China. Fans like Ariana Grande and Michelle Obama have come to love the brand’s elegant micro plissé evening skirts, diamante capes and dainty bralettes.

Luar

The former co-founder of popular streetwear label Hood By Air, Dominican-American designer Raul Lopez launched his reverse namesake label Luar for SS’17. Named a top ten finalist for the prestigious CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund in 2018, Solange and Rihanna are major fans of the designer’s careful deconstructions, surprising texture combinations, and strong references to ‘90s pop culture.

Social-Work

If you’re in the market for the perfect balance between East and West, look no further than Social-Work Studio which debuted its first collection for SS’19. Helmed by Parsons graduates Chenghui Zhang, who grew up in Shenzhen, and Qi Wang, who hails from Hubei, the New York-Based unisex brand provides socio-political commentary through a blend of both contemporary and vintage references from China and the West. Think 60s-inspired flared jumpsuits, bright colours, mesmerising patterns, and matching two-piece sets, offering elevated utility with a playful edge.

Matthew Adams Dolan

A Massachusetts native and a Parson’s graduate, eponymous designer Matthew Adams Dolan launched his first collection for SS’16. With a strong emphasis on denim, comfort and versatility are at the core of his design ethos. Dolan’s roomy silhouettes and vibrant aesthetic are a firm favourite amongst A-listers like Rihanna.
