“Elegance is about speed and ease: it springs from self-awareness, swift gestures, and genuine expression,” read Tod’s AW’19 show notes. The collection was a lesson in classic elegance, underpinned by the effortless use of leather – the Italian house’s strong suit.
A series of outerwear pieces that could slip easily into any modern wardrobe showcased the sophisticated versatility of the material: Classic trenches, biker jackets and parkas were explored in butter smooth finishes, or statement croc effect, glossy patent or leopard print, adding a touch of feral glamour.
In a reaffirmation of the label’s nuanced understanding of its possibilities, leather featured throughout the lineup: crafted into featherlight blazers and shirts in warm camel tones, midi skirts with seductive front slits in burgundy and bottle green, A-line shift dresses in powder pink and masculine trousers in sandy beige.
Considering this was Tod’s, there were of course plenty of key leather accessories to complete the looks: signature double-T clasp belts cinched coats and dresses into ladylike shapes; penny loafers with metal details and boots with chunky soles added a hint of boyish utility, and bags appeared in all shapes and sizes including bucket styles, functional shoppers and weekend totes.
Yet it was a handful of non-leather pieces that added an extra layer of wearability and nonchalance to the polished offering, including roomy overcoats in houndstooth and checkered wools, and cosy knits with palm tree and wave motifs. One expects nothing less of Tod’s: the collection exuded high-end Italian flair with well-crafted staples that will stand the test of time.
